Universidade de Aveiro (Portugal)
The Universidade de Aveiro is a middle-sized university centred on the town of Aveiro, middle of Portugal. The University is quite well-known, with several of its research branches to reach the prestigious Excellent ranking from the official evaluation process in Portugal.
The University is now launching its specific Living Labs-alike project, bringing the whole campus into a integrated field for novel technologies, expanding the existing localized demonstrators (such as the Home of the Future, or the Salina network).
In terms of electronics, UA has an integrated department Departamento de Electronica, Telecomunicações e Informática, bringing together electronics with applications on telecommunications and with computer control. The research units associated with DETI are considered excellent. In particular, the group participating in this proposal is affiliated with the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT). IT mission is to create and disseminate scientific knowledge in the field of Electronics and Telecommunications and thus it undertakes fundamental and applied research in an international context in order to improve higher education and training (both at graduate and postgraduate levels) and the competitiveness of Portuguese industry. The main research areas are wireless communications, optical networks, networks and Basic Sciences. Such a broad range of research areas and the expertise developed within the institute, and in co-operation with other international R&D groups, ensures a sound response to R&D challenges.
Members of IT have important experience in R&D projects both at national and international levels, along with consulting work for operators and industry in Portugal. Previous and current participation in European projects includes: IST/DAIDALOS, IST/EURONGI, IST/AKOGRIMO, IST/4MORE, IST/WIP, IST/CMOBILE,IST/MOBYDICK.
The team involved in this project is currently running a research project on the usage of traffic lights for driving safety, and has long experience on the exploitation of LED technology in different scenarios. This experience will be exploited for the deployment of a demonstrator in the University Campus.
